Replace Your Trunk Provider

SIP Trunking · 10 min read Migration SIP Cost saving
What this guide covers: How to migrate from your current SIP trunk provider (BT, KPN, Vonage, etc.) to Cliqtel. Includes a cost comparison framework, step-by-step migration checklist, PBX configuration, number porting, and a rollback plan.

Overview

Traditional trunk providers bundle minutes, charge per-channel fees, and lock you into 12-24 month contracts. Cliqtel replaces all of that with flat per-number pricing: you pay for your numbers, inbound calls are free, and there are no channel limits or bundled minute packs.

The migration typically takes under an hour for the SIP trunk setup, plus 5-15 business days for number porting (if you're keeping your existing numbers).

Cost Comparison

Calculate your potential savings:

Cost itemTraditional providerCliqtel
Monthly trunk fee€20-50/month per trunkFree (no trunk fee)
Per-channel fee€5-10/channel/monthNo channel limits
Inbound per-minute€0.01-0.03/minFree (included)
Number rental€3-8/number/month€0.50-2.00/number/month
Contract12-24 monthsMonth-to-month
Setup fee€50-200 one-timeFree
Example: A company with 10 numbers, 2 SIP channels, and 5,000 inbound minutes/month pays ~€150/month with a traditional provider. With Cliqtel: ~€15/month (10 numbers × €1.50 avg). That's a 90% cost reduction.

Migration Checklist

  1. Audit current setup — list all numbers, trunk settings, inbound routes, and outbound rules
  2. Create Cliqtel account and top up wallet
  3. Create SIP trunk on Cliqtel and configure your PBX
  4. Test with new numbers — order temporary Cliqtel numbers to verify calls work
  5. Port existing numbers — submit LOA to Cliqtel for number transfer
  6. Cutover — once porting completes, switch PBX to Cliqtel trunk
  7. Cancel old provider — after 2-week parallel run

Step 1 — Create Cliqtel Trunk

1Create a SIP trunk in the Cliqtel portal
  1. Go to My Numbers → SIP Trunks → Create Trunk
  2. Name it (e.g., "Office PBX")
  3. Copy the SIP credentials: username, password, SIP server (sip.cliqtel.com)

Step 2 — Configure Your PBX

2Point your PBX at the Cliqtel trunk

Add Cliqtel as a second trunk on your PBX (don't remove the old one yet). See our platform-specific guides:

  • 3CX setup guide
  • FreePBX setup guide
  • Asterisk setup guide
Parallel trunks: Keep your old trunk active while you test Cliqtel. Configure outbound routes to use Cliqtel for test calls while inbound stays on the old trunk until porting is complete.

Step 3 — Port Your Numbers

3Transfer your existing numbers to Cliqtel
  1. Contact Cliqtel support with a list of numbers to port
  2. We'll send you a Letter of Authorization (LOA) to sign
  3. Submit the LOA along with a recent invoice from your current provider
  4. Porting typically takes 5-15 business days depending on the country
  5. We'll notify you when the port is scheduled and when it completes
Don't cancel your old provider before porting completes. If you cancel before the port date, your numbers may be lost. Wait until Cliqtel confirms the port is complete, then cancel.

Step 4 — Cutover

4Switch all traffic to Cliqtel
  1. Once porting completes, your numbers are live on Cliqtel
  2. Update your PBX inbound routes to use the Cliqtel trunk
  3. Update outbound routes to prefer the Cliqtel trunk
  4. Run a 2-week parallel period with the old trunk as failover
  5. After 2 weeks with no issues, remove the old trunk and cancel the old provider

Rollback Plan

If anything goes wrong during migration:

  • Before porting: Simply remove the Cliqtel trunk from your PBX. Nothing changes for your callers.
  • During porting: Contact Cliqtel support to cancel the port. Your numbers stay with the old provider.
  • After porting: You can port numbers back to another provider if needed (though this is rare).

FAQ

Will there be downtime during migration?

No. Number porting is designed to be seamless — calls switch to the new carrier within seconds. There's typically less than 30 seconds of unavailability during the actual port, and it's scheduled during off-peak hours.

Can I keep my current numbers?

Yes. We support number porting from most carriers in the EU, US, UK, and other major markets. Contact support to confirm portability for your specific numbers.

What if I have a contract with my current provider?

You may face early termination fees from your current provider. However, Cliqtel's cost savings often pay back the termination fee within 2-3 months. Calculate your ROI before committing.
