Why European DID Numbers Are Different

European telecom regulation is stricter than most of the world. Unlike the US or Canada, many European countries require you to prove identity and address before they will assign a phone number. This is called a regulatory requirement, and it is enforced by national telecom authorities such as BNetzA (Germany), ARCEP (France), and ACM (Netherlands).

The good news: DIDfarm handles the entire regulatory workflow for you. Upload your documents once and our portal submits them to the upstream carrier automatically.

Which European Countries Need Regulatory Documents?

These countries require identity verification for most or all number types:

The UK and Ireland accept most orders without documentation for local and national numbers, making them the fastest countries to activate.

Typical Activation Times

  • Instant — UK, Ireland, toll-free in most countries (60 seconds)
  • 1 business day — Netherlands, Belgium after document approval
  • 1–3 business days — Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland
  • 3–5 business days — Countries with manual regulator review

If you need a number urgently, start with UK or Ireland while your regulatory documents are being processed for other countries.

Types of European Numbers

Local Geographic Numbers

These are tied to a specific city area code — for example, +49 30 (Berlin), +33 1 (Paris), +31 20 (Amsterdam). They build local trust and qualify for lower termination rates on inbound calls. Most businesses choose a local number in each major market they serve.

National Numbers

Non-geographic numbers that work across an entire country, like the UK 0330 or Germany 032 ranges. Great when you want one number for the whole country without appearing tied to a single city.

Mobile Numbers

DIDfarm provides virtual mobile numbers in most European markets, which can receive both voice and SMS. Ideal for two-factor authentication, Telegram/WhatsApp verification, and customer messaging. See the Messaging product for outbound SMS.

Toll-Free Numbers

Free-to-call numbers such as UK 0800, German 0800, or French 0805. Customers dial for free, your business pays per minute. Perfect for customer support lines.

What Documents Do You Need?

For regulated countries, DIDfarm typically asks for:

  1. Company registration — KvK (NL), HRB (DE), SIRET (FR), Companies House (UK), etc.
  2. Proof of address — utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement (less than 3 months old)
  3. Director ID — passport or national ID of the company signatory
  4. Local address — some countries require an address in the country (Netherlands is strict)

Individual customers can usually provide a national ID and a utility bill. The DIDfarm portal tells you exactly what is needed per country after you place an order.

How the Order Flow Works

  1. Top up your wallet — use a credit card, iDEAL, Klarna, or Bancontact on the Billing tab
  2. Pick your country and number typebrowse available numbers by country
  3. Complete checkout — your wallet is debited atomically once the order is valid
  4. Upload regulatory documents (if required) — the portal walks you through it step by step
  5. Number activates — you will receive an email the moment the upstream carrier approves

Paying Monthly vs Prepaid

DIDfarm uses a prepaid wallet model. You top up with any amount, and the wallet is debited each month for active numbers and per minute for calls. There are no contracts, no surprise invoices, and you can release numbers at any time to stop billing. If you need monthly invoicing for accounting purposes, contact support.
